Regular commands in Spanish
Regular commands help you tell someone what to do. In Spanish, the form changes depending on whether you speak to tú, usted, ustedes, or nosotros.
Overview
Commands are used to give instructions, advice, directions, or suggestions.
- Habla más despacio. → Speak more slowly.
- Coma algo antes de salir. → Eat something before leaving.
- Vivamos con calma. → Let’s live calmly.
Regular commands follow clear patterns. The ending depends on the verb group: -ar, -er, or -ir.
Affirmative regular commands
Use affirmative commands when you tell someone to do something.

Negative regular commands
Use negative commands when you tell someone not to do something.

How to form regular commands
Tú commands
For affirmative tú commands, use the same form as él / ella / usted in the present tense.
- Hablar → habla → Habla conmigo. → Talk to me.
- Comer → come → Come despacio. → Eat slowly.
- Escribir → escribe → Escribe tu nombre. → Write your name.
For negative tú commands, use no + present subjunctive form.
- No hables tan rápido. → Do not speak so fast.
- No comas ahora. → Do not eat now.
- No escribas en el libro. → Do not write in the book.
Usted, ustedes, and nosotros commands
For usted, ustedes, and nosotros, use the command form in both affirmative and negative sentences.
- Lea la pregunta. → Read the question.
- No abran la puerta. → Do not open the door.
- Practiquemos juntos. → Let’s practice together.
