Use the past progressive to talk about what someone was doing at a specific moment in the past.

What were you doing?

Let’s express an idea with this tense:

  • Yo estaba leyendo. – I was reading.

We use this tense to say what someone was doing at a specific time in the past.

  • Ayer a las ocho, yo estaba leyendo. – Yesterday at eight, I was reading.
  • Cuando llamaste, Ana estaba cocinando. – When you called, Ana was cooking.

How to form the past progressive

To form the past progressive in Spanish, you need two parts:

  • estar in the imperfect
  • -ando or -iendo at the end of the main verb

Estar in the imperfect

-ar verbs

For -ar verbs, remove -ar and add -ando.

Sentence forms with -ar verbs

Afirmativa

  • Yo estaba esperando el autobús. – I was waiting for the bus.
  • Laura estaba limpiando la cocina. – Laura was cleaning the kitchen.
  • Mis amigos estaban buscando un restaurante. – My friends were looking for a restaurant.

Negativa

  • Nosotros no estábamos mirando la película. – We were not watching the movie.
  • El profesor no estaba explicando esa parte. – The teacher was not explaining that part.
  • Ustedes no estaban esperando afuera. – You all were not waiting outside.

Preguntas de sí/no

  • ¿Estabas estudiando anoche? – Were you studying last night?
  • ¿Ellos estaban buscando las llaves? – Were they looking for the keys?
  • ¿Estábamos hablando muy rápido? – Were we speaking too fast?

-er and -ir verbs

For -er verbs like comer:

  • comer → com- → comiendo
  • Yo estaba comiendo. – I was eating.

For -ir verbs like abrir:

  • abrir → abr- → abriendo
  • Ella estaba abriendo la ventana. – She was opening the window.
