Hacer and Ir in the Preterite

We use hacer to talk about things we did or made in the past, and ir to talk about places we went.

Ayer hice ejercicio.

Yesterday I exercised.
Fui al gimnasio.

I went to the gym.
Fui al gimnasio e hice ejercicio.

I went to the gym and exercised.

Time Markers

We can use these expressions to say when something happened in the past.

We can also omit the time expression when the context makes it clear that we are talking about the past.

Combining Hacer and Ir

Ayer hice ejercicio y después desayuné. — Yesterday I exercised and then had breakfast.
Mi hermana hizo la cena y escuchó música. — My sister made dinner and listened to music.
Nosotros hicimos la tarea y miramos televisión. — We did our homework and watched television.
No hice ejercicio ayer, pero caminé por el parque. — I didn’t exercise yesterday, but I walked through the park.

Fuimos al parque y caminamos. — We went to the park and walked.
Ayer fui al supermercado y compré comida. — Yesterday I went to the supermarket and bought food.
Mis amigos fueron al cine y miraron una película. — My friends went to the movies and watched a movie.
No fui al gimnasio ayer. Me quedé en casa y descansé. — I didn’t go to the gym yesterday. I stayed home and rested.
Ella no fue al supermercado. Compró comida por internet. — She didn’t go to the supermarket. She bought food online.
Nosotros no fuimos al restaurante. Preparamos la cena en casa. — We didn’t go to the restaurant. We prepared dinner at home.
