Past in spanish: Imperfecto. Verbos de estado.

State verbs often use the imperfect because they describe conditions, knowledge, feelings, possession, or wants in the past. They give background instead of a single finished event.

Overview

Common state verbs include estar, tener, saber, conocer, querer, necesitar, creer, and entender. In the imperfect they describe what was true at the time.

  • Estaba cansado y tenía hambre. → I was tired and hungry.
  • Sabíamos la dirección, pero no conocíamos la zona. → We knew the address, but we did not know the area.

Cómo/cuándo lo usamos

Conditions and feelings

Use the imperfect for what someone was feeling or what condition they were in.

  • Estábamos nerviosos. → We were nervous.
  • Tenía frío. → I was cold.

Knowledge, possession, and wants

Use it for what someone knew, had, believed, wanted, or needed at that time.

  • Conocía bien el barrio. → She knew the neighborhood well.
  • Necesitábamos más tiempo. → We needed more time.

Estructura

Patrón Example Translation
state verb in imperfect + condition Yo estaba cansado. I was tired.
tener/saber/conocer in imperfect Ella sabía la respuesta. She knew the answer.
querer/necesitar in imperfect + infinitive/noun Queríamos descansar. We wanted to rest.

Oraciones.

Afirmativas

  • Yo trabajaba en el centro. → I used to work downtown.
  • Tú comías con tu familia. → You used to eat with your family.
  • Ella vivía cerca. → She used to live nearby.
  • Nosotros íbamos al parque. → We used to go to the park.

Negativas

  • Yo no salía mucho. → I did not use to go out much.
  • Él no tenía coche. → He did not have a car.
  • Nosotras no veíamos televisión. → We did not use to watch TV.
  • Ellos no eran vecinos. → They were not neighbors.

Forma de pregunta

  • ¿Trabajabas los sábados? → Did you use to work on Saturdays?
  • ¿Ella vivía aquí? → Did she use to live here?
  • ¿Íbamos juntos? → Did we use to go together?
  • ¿Ustedes veían esa serie? → Did you all use to watch that series?
