Direct object pronouns work the same with irregular verbs. The verb form may be irregular, but the pronoun still goes before the conjugated verb in simple sentences.
Overview
With verbs like tener, poner, hacer, decir, traer, poder, querer, saber, and venir, keep the pronoun placement steady: lo tengo, la pongo, lo hago, te vengo a buscar.
- Tengo el pasaporte. Lo tengo. → I have the passport. I have it.
- Hago la tarea. La hago. → I do the homework. I do it.
Cómo/cuándo lo usamos
Replace a repeated noun
Use lo, la, los, or las when the object is already clear.
- Tengo el boleto. Lo tengo. → I have the ticket. I have it.
- Compro las entradas. Las compro. → I buy the tickets. I buy them.
People can be direct objects
Use me, te, nos, lo, la, los, or las for people who receive the action directly.
- Ana me ayuda. → Ana helps me.
- Yo te escucho. → I listen to you.
