Pretérito: finished actions in the past

The preterite talks about completed actions in the past. Use it when an action has a clear beginning, end, or finished result.

Overview

The Spanish preterite is common with yesterday, last night, last week, specific dates, and actions that happened once or were completed.

  • Ayer estudié español. → Yesterday I studied Spanish.
  • Ella compró café esta mañana. → She bought coffee this morning.

Cómo/cuándo lo usamos

Completed actions

Use the preterite when the action is finished.

  • Terminé la tarea. → I finished the homework.
  • Ustedes visitaron el museo. → You all visited the museum.

Specific time in the past

The preterite often appears with specific past-time expressions.

  • El lunes compré un libro. → On Monday I bought a book.
  • Anoche vimos una película. → Last night we watched a movie.

Sequence of events

Use the preterite to tell what happened next in a past story.

  • Entré, saludé y me senté. → I entered, said hello, and sat down.
  • Ella llegó y llamó a su mamá. → She arrived and called her mom.
