Condicional real: Si + Present Indicative

Real conditional sentences describe situations that are possible or realistic.

Overview

Use this structure when the condition can really happen.
The firt clause followed by “si” gives the condition,
the other clause gives the result.

  • Si tengo tiempo, estudio español. → If I have time, I study Spanish.
  • Si llueve, nos quedamos en casa. → If it rains, we stay at home.

Real possibilities

Use this conditional when something is possible, factual, or likely to happen.

  • Si Ana está en casa, la visitamos. → If Ana is at home, we visit her.
  • Si tú puedes, empezamos ahora. → If you can, we start now.

General truths

Real conditionals can describe facts.

  • Si calientas agua, hierve → If you heat water, it boils.
  • Si calientas metal, se expande → If you heat metal, it expands.

Estructura

Forma Example Translation
si + present indicative + present indicative Si tengo dinero, compro comida. If I have money, I buy food.
present indicative + si + present indicative compro comida si tengo dinero. I buy food if I have money.

Oraciones.

Afirmativas

  • Si estudio, aprendo más. → If I study, I learn more.
  • Si hago café, tomo una taza. → If I make coffee, I drink a cup.
  • Vamos al cine, si compro las entradas. → We go to the movies if I buy the tickets.
  • Si hace frío, cierro la ventana. → If it is cold, I close the window.

Negativas

  • Si no tengo dinero, no compro nada. → If I do not have money, I do not buy anything.
  • No salimos si llueve. → We do not go out if it rains.
  • Si no entiendes, puedes preguntar. → If you do not understand, you can ask.

Forma de pregunta

  • ¿Si llueve, cancelamos la clase? → If it rains, do we cancel the class?
  • ¿Vienes si te invito? → Do you come if I invite you?
