How to use the Spanish past tense: pretérito indicativo. Learn how to describe actions that you did yesterday, last week, or even a second ago.
In this case we are going to use regular verbs that end in -ar -er -ir
El Pretérito Indicativo – Regular Past Tense in Spanish
We use the preterite tense to talk about completed actions in the past, at a specific moment.
Yo trabajé ayer → I worked yesterday
When Do We Use the Preterite?
The preterite answers questions like:
- ¿Qué hiciste ayer? → What did you do yesterday?
- ¿Qué pasó esta mañana? → What happened this morning?
- ¿Qué hiciste hace un segundo? → What did you do a second ago?

✅ Oraciones afirmativas:
- Yo trabajé todo el día. → I worked all day.
- Ella comió una pizza. → She ate a pizza.
- Nosotros vivimos en esa ciudad. → We lived in that city.
❌ Oraciones negativas:
- Yo no comí anoche. → I didn’t eat last night.
- Ellos no trabajaron el domingo. → They didn’t work on Sunday.
- Nosotros no vivimos en ese barrio. → We didn’t live in that neighborhood.
❓ Preguntas:
- ¿Trabajaste en ese proyecto? → Did you work on that project?
- ¿Ellos comieron en el restaurante? → Did they eat at the restaurant?
- ¿Viviste en esa casa? → Did you live in that house?
🕒 Preterite indicators
These expressions indicate that the action occurred at a specific time:
- ayer → yesterday
- la semana pasada → last week
- hace un minuto → a minute ago
- esta mañana → this morning
- el año pasado → last year
- en 2020 → in 2020
- el otro día → the other day
🎯 Tip:
Sometimes the context is enough to know that it is about the past, even without using a time marker..
